1. cinco de mayo vocabulary: 10 minutes
Supply Needed: Download and print off the Cinco de Mayo visuals and flashcards.
Last week, your little learners were all ears about Cinco de Mayo. This week, get ready to sprinkle some festive magic by introducing them to Cinco de Mayo vocabulary. Hit play on the audio and flash those pictures like a pro as the words are chanted. Get the kiddos to join in the fun and sing along! Think of the green and white table as your secret weapon for nailing those tricky pronunciations. ¡Vamos!
Next, hold up those snazzy color-coded word flashcards and let the vocabulary fiesta begin! One by one, call out the words and have your students play detective to match them with the right Cinco de Mayo picture. Stick those flashcards cards in place with tape let the learning party roll on!

2. PIÑATA PARTY: 20 minutes
Supplies Needed: Purchase a piñata, a piñata stick, and prizes (small toys). You can find them at Party City. I purchase toys instead of candy. One small toy per child is plenty. Party City sells toys intended for piñatas in large quantities at a reasonable price. You can check to see if Walmart has similar items at a cheaper price. I don't put the toys inside of the piñata, but instead, I let each child choose a toy after they have all had a chance to hit the piñata with the stick.
Here are examples of what you can purchase at party city:
(Because your students will gently hit the piñata, it rarely gets damaged and you'll be able to reuse the same piñata and the stick year after year!) There are many styles of piñatas at Party City, pick the one that your students will enjoy the most. Kids LOVE the variety of toys pictured below. That is the exact bag of toys that I purchase for my students, but again, Party City has a variety to choose from and they also sell them in smaller quantities!
Before starting the party, play "La Fiesta de Piñata" audio file and practice acting out the phrases as they are sung. Play the audio file a second and third time and have your students spread out around the room and practice acting out the phrases with you.
Before starting the piñata party, lay down the rules for your little rascals and I assure you the party will be calm and controlled. Tell them each student will get to gently hit the piñata three times with the stick. (Because they gently hit the piñata, it rarely gets damaged and you'll be able to reuse the same piñata and the stick year after year!) I usually skip the blindfold, but you do decide if you would like to use it. Let them know that there are no prizes inside of the piñata because you don't want them to get broken. However, assure them that after everyone has had a turn to hit the piñata, they will each get to pick a prize!
Tie one end of the rope to something sturdy and hold the other end, making sure the piñata hangs just right in the center. Keep the kids at a safe distance to avoid any accidental knocks. Pick the quietest student to take swings first, just three hits each, while the rest count along, uno, dos, tres. For older kids, throw in some Spanish phrases from the audio file like "Pégala" and "¡Arriba!" After everyone's had a turn, gather around and reveal the prizes. I like to make this a really big deal and show the kids what each prize or toy does. For example, if yo yo's are one of the prizes, I model how to make the yo-yo work and I let them know it will take some practice to master it. I repeat this with each of the toys, demonstrating how each one works. Then I let the calmest kiddos pick their prizes first. Now, get ready for a super fun and calm piñata fiesta with your little amigos. They will talk about it for weeks to come! (Be sure to take pictures and videos to send home to parents!)

3. PIÑATA COLORING SHEET: 10 minutes
After the piñata bash, it's time to dive into the piñata coloring extravaganza! I kick things off by showcasing my coloring skills on a sheet, demonstrating how to stay inside the lines and jazz up the piñata with a rainbow of hues! I proudly display my masterpiece for the kids to peek at while they work their coloring magic. As they color away, sprinkle compliments and cheers like confetti! If you're a Spanish color pro, name the colors in Spanish that your students are using to spice things up! Don't forget to send the coloring sheets home - they'll be fridge-worthy art and a sweet reminder to parents that you're not just teaching Spanish, but spreading cultural fun too!
