1. Mexican hat dance: 15 minutes
Optional Supply: (Mexican Sombrero) If you have a sombrero lay it on the floor in the center of the circle when you do the dance. For extra help, you can also download the guide for the body actions below.
I've taught the Mexican Hat Dance even to toddlers and let me tell you, it's cuteness overload! Sure, the little ones might need a hand with the moves at first, but once they've got it, it's pure adorableness - a must-see for parents! And when it comes to elementary kids, they totally own this dance!
To kick things off, gather 'round for the digital lesson where I break down the moves from 00:00 to 9:07 minutes. Then, get your student squad in a circle to practice the steps together, nice and slow without the music. They might need a bit of guidance with linking elbows and spinning around, but once they've got the hang of it, they'll be rocking it! After a quick run-through, hit play on the audio and let the dancing commence! You may want to do the dance to warm-up for Spanish class over the next several weeks. If you're planning a graduation or performance for parents this spring, you'll want to include this dance for sure! It's always a hit with parents! |
2. mexican hat COLORING SHEET: 10 minutes
After the festive Mexican hat dance, let's explore the Mexican Hat coloring extravaganza! I begin by demonstrating my coloring skills on a sheet, illustrating how to color within the lines and enhance the Mexican Hat with a variety of vibrant hues. I proudly showcase my artwork for the children to admire while they unleash their coloring creativity. Encourage them with compliments and cheers as they immerse themselves in coloring. For a touch of flair, if you're fluent in Spanish colors, name the hues in Spanish that the students are using. Remember to send the coloring sheets home – they will make lovely fridge-worthy art pieces and serve as a delightful reminder to parents that you're not just teaching Spanish, but also sharing cultural enjoyment.
3. May calendar time: 5 minutes
Supplies Needed: May calendar. Use your classroom calendar or print off the May calendar below.
|
Now you can turn calendar time into a bilingual bonanza! Show your students the May calendar. Encourage them to count in English, then in Spanish from 1-31. Next, play the Spanish in May (Numbers 1-31) audio file to spice up the counting activity!
Turn this into a student led activity and you will have kiddos competing to be called on! This is how it goes down in my classroom: I like to let students take turns holding my "magic wand", come to the front of the class, and point to numbers 1-10 as we sing along with the audio file. Then I pause the song and that student picks another student who is quiet to hold the magic wand and come up and point as we sing numbers 11-20, and a third student gets to point to numbers 21-31 as the entire class sings the numbers along with the catchy tune! Who knew numbers could spark such a lively classroom jam session? |
4. Make Numbers 1-10 Flashcards: 20 minutes
Supplies Needed: Download, make copies, and cut flashcards. One set per student.
It's time for your preschoolers and up to create their own number flashcards so they can continue reviewing numbers on their own, with a friend, and at home. This activity was suggested by a Creative Kids Academy Assistant Director. She asked for it and I created it for all of you! Continue sharing your ideas with me so that I can keep serving up all the Spanish teaching and learning fun you crave! Hit play on the audio file and let the numbers sing!

Why? Because success doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Your wins are our wins, and they’re proof for others that when you do the work, you get results.
Whether your students are finally beginning to repeat or sing in Spanish along with the digital lessons, or say words in Spanish during the day, or teachers are feeling more confident carrying out the Easy Review Activities, or parents are sharing that their child is speaking Spanish at home — we want to hear your wins BIG and small!
Celebrating you always,
