Here is a short Cinco de Mayo video you can show your class.

My husband and I had a blast at the Cinco de Mayo celebration in St. Paul this Saturday! 🌮🎉 We made a quick 2-minute video you can watch and share with your students. It’s a little peek into the fun and culture of Cinco de Mayo.

While we were out for lunch, we met the sweetest waitress who was thrilled that I spoke Spanish. She even agreed to be in our video and shared a few things about Cinco de Mayo—in Spanish, of course! 🇲🇽 Enjoy the video and maybe even practice a few Spanish words together with your class!

2. Mother's Day Song: 10 Minutes

Supply Needed:  Download and print off the Mother's Day song lyrics. Cut them into sentences and if possible, laminate them.

Help your students pair the color-coded Spanish and English song lyrics. Display them on your wall or bulletin board for a matching activity. While playing the song, point to the lyrics and sing together. Teachers, refer to the green and white table to the left below to teach the Mother's Day song correctly. When practicing pronunciation, sound out the words as you would in English to master the correct Spanish pronunciation.

Supply Needed:  Download and print off the Mother's Day cards. There are two designs to choose from You will also need crayons, markers, or colored pencils.

This activity not only allows the children to express their creativity through coloring but also gives them the opportunity to practice singing a special song in Spanish dedicated to their mothers. It's sure to bring smiles to both the children's faces and their mothers' hearts!

  1. Introduction: To start off, gather your students together and explain the significance of Mother's Day. Discuss how it's a day to celebrate and honor the wonderful mothers in our lives and show them how much we love and appreciate them.

  2. Exploration of the Card: Before diving into coloring, take a moment to explore the card together. Read the message inside and practice the song included by playing the audio file below

  3. Distribution of Materials: Distribute the pre-made Mother's Day cards to each child, along with crayons, markers, or colored pencils for coloring. Make sure to have a variety of colors and decorative materials to inspire creativity.

  4. Coloring Time: Now it's time for the fun part! The children will use their artistic skills to color a picture of them with their mom, doing a special activity while making their card as vibrant and beautiful as they can. They should also color the flower petals and the rays of sun on the back of the card. As they color, they can also practice singing the song to themselves or with their friends.

  5. Guidance and Encouragement: Throughout the activity, provide guidance and encouragement to the children, helping them if they need assistance and praising their creativity and effort.

  6. Practice Session: Once the cards are colored, gather together again for a practice session. Sing the Mother's Day song together, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable with the melody and lyrics.

  7. Taking Home the Cards: Before Mother's Day, make sure each child's card is safely tucked into an envelope and ready to take home. Remind them to give their cards to their moms on Mother's Day with a big smile and lots of love.
