Cinco de Mayo
Did you know that Cinco de Mayo (May 5th) commemorates the Mexican army's unexpected triumph over France at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, in the midst of the Franco-Mexican War? Despite France's superior numbers, weaponry, and uniforms, Mexico emerged victorious. While Cinco de Mayo is observed in Mexico, the most extensive festivities occur in U.S. cities with substantial Mexican-American communities. Notably, the world's largest celebration is held in Los Angeles, California. Numerous U.S. cities host Cinco de Mayo events featuring parades, mariachi music, delectable Mexican cuisine, piñatas, and street festivals. Check if there are any local celebrations and consider attending one as a family this May 5th!
To learn about Cinco de Mayo, we'll use some of the colorful visuals you see below. With guidance, students will match the correct vocabulary word flash card with the pictures. Can you say the vocabulary words with your child? Use the pronunciation key to help you. Stress the syllable that is bold and underlined and your Spanish will be spot on!

Mexican Food
Kids think it's pretty cool that some words they know if English, are the same in Spanish. They are actually Spanish words. We'll practice some of these common Mexican words that happen to be food:
1. the taco = el taco 2. the salsa = la salsa 3. the guacamole = el guacamole Perhaps on Cinco de Mayo, you can whip up a Mexican dish for dinner! |

Happy Mother's Day!
In class, we will learn how to say "Happy Mother's Day" and other endearing phrases in Spanish. Additionally, we will practice a lovely Mother's Day song in Spanish that children can sing to their mother or grandmothers. Your child may even bring home a Mother's Day card in Spanish to present as a heartfelt gift!
Happy Mother's Day=¡Feliz día de Madres! (¡Feh-lees dee-yah deh mah-drehs!)
Mother's Day Song:
Play the audio of the song and follow the lyrics below. Sing along with your child. Focus on enjoying the moment rather than worrying about pronunciation. The first attempt may be challenging, but with repeated practice, it will become easier, and singing in Spanish will feel more natural. (The song is performed by my adorable daughter, Ellie, who my husband and I raised in a bilingual home-Spanish and English!
