One of my former jobs was as a Spanish immersion teacher. I taught 3rd and 4th grade at the Robbinsdale Spanish Immersion Program in Minnesota. At the same time my husband and I began our family. We made the decision to raise our children in a bilingual home. I speak to our children in Spanish and my husband in English which is such an exciting and rewarding experience on a daily basis!
As a former Spanish immersion teacher and a mom who has experienced how gratifying it is to raise children speaking two languages, I wanted to offer Spanish immersion parents (even parents who don’t know any Spanish) a fun and practical resource they can use at home to support and participate in their children’s Spanish immersion experience.

Dear Teachers and Parents:
Use a reward system to entice your students to speak Spanish. For example, when my own children were toddlers, I would model for them how to ask for a cookie or an apple in Spanish. They would have to ask for the food they wanted in Spanish in order to receive it. After a very short time they began asking for all of their food in Spanish. It was pretty simple. To outsiders it sounded like they were speaking a ton of Spanish but in reality they were repeating the same phrase over and over and simply plugging in new food vocabulary. My young kids “cracked the code”!
The same can be done in the classroom. In order for a child to receive crayones, stickers, treats, anything, make sure they ask for it in Spanish. Help them at first but as soon as they hear their classmates asking for items in Spanish and they hear you repeating the phrase over and over with each student, they will catch on. Below see a phrase you can teach your students so they can politely ask for things. After teaching this useful phrase, insist (with your help) that the children always ask for things in Spanish. This alone will increase the amount of Spanish spoken in your home or classroom by leaps and bounds. Children ask for things throughout the day, now they will be speaking Spanish everytime they ask for something!
¿Me das __________, por favor? (This means "Could you please give me __________?)

Hey teachers and parents using Teach & Learn Spanish;
The cutest thing happened today! I began teaching the Spanish in August lesson to a group of 8 three and four year olds. I showed them the pictures of farm animals and made sure they knew the names of the animals in English which they did. Then I played Spanish in August Cd Track 12 in which we pretended to walk to a barn and open the barn door together. I pretended to open the door and they followed suit. After each farm animal was taught in Spanish, the Cd sings the Spanish word four times to a harp playing in the background. The kids loved pretending to play the harp while singing and after the short song stopped, they kept singing! It was adorable! I have a feeling that next week they are going to ask for the barn and harp song!
We also listened to and sung numbers 1-10 and 11-20 on Cd tracks 7 and 8. They LOVED singing to the high helium voice and the low monster voice. After, I gave them each a turn to say the numbers by themselves while pointing to them on the number visuals. They all wanted to take a turn and were so proud when they did!
Notice that I taught the August activities out of order. Do not feel you have to teach in order of the activities in the book. Pick and choose what you prefer and what is most relevant to your students and your childcare center or home!

Hey, I am super excited to share the newly revised "Spanish in August" lesson and Cd. It is printing and being bound as I am typing this. The kids learn numbers throughout the Spanish by the Month series but yesterday I added a new twist to the numbers songs. There are three tracks, one for learning numbers 1-10, another for 11-20 and another for 21-30. You and the kids chant the numbers to a fun beat two times, then you do so in a high voice-it sound like I just inhaled helium! The kids will get a kick out of that! To keep them on their toes, they then hear a low voice which sounds like a friendly monster though I don't mention the word monster as I don't want anyone to be afraid. There is even a robot voice that sings the numbers. The last verse everyone uses their regular voices. Be silly and encourage your children to be silly and repeat the numbers with the same voice they hear on the Cd. Counting in another language can be fun and silly-the kids will get a ton of repetition this way and I have a feeling they will beg you to count again and again with the silly Cd voices! Have fun!
Twenty-five years ago when I moved back to Minnesota from Madrid, Spain I was fortunate to get a job as a 4th, then a 3rd grade teacher at Robbinsdale Language Immersion Program (LIP). Back then, to the best of my knowlege, LIP was only the second language immersion school in the state of Minnesota! Roll the clock ahead to 2017 and there over 75 language immersion childcares and schools in Minnesota including Spanish, French, Chinese, Hmong, Ojibwe, Korean and German! And this does not include Home School Families. Know that you are on the cutting edge by using Teach & Learn Spanish to bring a second language into the lives of classroom of students or your own children!
Back in the 1990's When I lived in Madrid and traveled Europe I was always amazed and intrigued that it was considered normal for children to grow up speaking two and in some countries even three languages! After doing research I learned that a child's brain is wired to naturally acquire language, any language they are exposed to. So if I had a baby and moved to Japan, my baby would grow up totally fluent in Japanese. The same if I raised my child in France, they would grow up with a perfect French accent! How about raising a child here at home in the USA in English and at the same time exposing them to Spanish? Yep, they will grow up bilingually! This is the premise behind the very popular and growing number of language immersion schools not only in Minnesota but throughout the United States. As a 3rd grade teacher in Robbinsdale, the 8-year old American kids would begin the year with me fairly fluent in Spanish as they had been learning Spanish in grades K-2. The funny thing was that their parents didn't know any Spanish! There are several reasons why I created Teach & Learn: Spanish. One is to help you be on the cutting edge of teaching your classroom or your own children a second language, even if you don't know any Spanish. Another is to provide a super easy to use and fun resource for families who plan to or do send their child to a Spanish immersion school.

I just wanted to welcome everyone who is new to this blog! My hope is that we can all share ideas on what activies the kids love from the Spanish by the Month lessons!
Last night I had the privilege to meet and work with the Director and Preschool Teachers at the YMCA in Woodbury. They are wonderful to work with, have a great sense of humor and are eager to get started teaching Spanish to their students-HURRAH! They are beginning with Spanish In January. A new idea we talked about is to prepare a "Spanish Show" that the kids can perform at the end of each month to other classrooms or even to parents! If the kids knew they were working towards performing for others they would think that is pretty cool! One Woobury YMCA teacher suggested having her kids prepare the song "Frosty the Snowman" which is in the Spanish In January lesson-in Spanish it is called "Mi Hombre de Nieve". The kids can not only sing it but act it out for other classroom, people who visit the YMCA and parents-WOW!!!
I teach Spanish to toddlers and perschoolers at four centers each week. I am going to prepare my students at one of the centers to perform at the end of the month for other classrooms and I will let you know how it goes! I have a feeling it is going to be a HUGE HIT! If so I may implement it as a new goal each month!
Yesterday the kids I taught LOVED when we called the NORTH POLE to find out how to say parts of the snowman in Spanish: Spanish In January Activity 3 CD Track 3! They laughed a lot, paid very close attention and had so much fun!
Also after listening to the number CD Tracks for numbers 1-10 and 11-20 I asked the kids who wanted to try to count from 1-10 on their own. A few kids raised their hands and counted from 1-10 in Spnanish-all by themselves. I pretended to faint I was so happy. They thought that me fainting was so funny. By the end of the class every student took a turn! When a child could not count al the way, the class and I helped them. We poured on the compliments from this lesson: "¡Qué guay! ¡Magnífico! ¡Bien hecho!
There is so much packed into this lesson and each lesson, focus on a few activities and help your kids learn them well rather than trying to get to every activity. (Save the extra activites for a rainy day or for next year!)

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and are looking ahead to a fun New Years weekend! I have posted the Spanish In January interactive newsletter on the website. When I teach my toddlers and preschoolers I bring my phone to class and show them the interactive newsletter during our class. (I can get the internet on my phone.) This gets them excited to want to share the interactive newsletter with their parents at home. The more you can involve parents in their learning, the better they will become at Spanish. Besides, parents LOVE when we communicate with them about what their child is learning in our classes. I speak from personal experience, I have two kids and the teachers that communicate with me are ones who I believe are more organized, more professional, more passionate about their job (teaching our children which is pretty important right?) and on top of their game! On another note I would like to ask your opinion about possibly changing the title "Spanish by the Month". The reason is two-fold.
1. I have had requests to create lessons above and beyond the 12 monthly themes. For example some homeschool families have asked that I create "Spanish for Mission Trips". Another idea is to create other lessons such as "Spanish at bedtime" and "Spanish at the Grocery Store" etc. and so many more.
2. The title "Spanish by the Month" does not let people know the most important and unique feature about the product: that you learn Spanish while you teach it, no priror knowledge of Spanish is needed and anyone can become a Spanish teacher using it.
Some ideas I have are to change the title-have a main title and a follow-up sentence. Here are some ideas:
1. "Teach & Learn: Spanish"
2. "The Spanish Teacher In You"
3. "Teaching Spanish Made Simple"
4. "Learning & Teaching Spanish"
5. "I Can Teach Spanish"
The phrase following the title will be: "Your Guide to Learning Spanish While You Teach It!"
Feel free to give me fresh ideas you might have for a title that catches to essence of the program!

Hola Parents and Teachers!
I wanted to share with you how easy and fun the "Trick-or-Treating" activity was today with my three and four-year old students. We first listening to the Spanish In October CD Track 8 in which the door bell "rings" and the children learn how to say "Trick-or-Treat" in Spanish and "Thank you" and "You're welcome".
Then I handed out a Halloween bag to four students at at time. I stood behind a table in the room and told them I was in my house. They had to come up to the "door" of my house and pretend to ring the doorbell. The entire class chanted "ding-dong". When I pretended to open the door the entire class (those at the door and those waiting for a turn who were sitting in the circle) chanted "Dulce o Truco" which means "Trick-or-Treat" in Spanish! Then each child held their bag open and I said, "Dulce" and gave them each a cute little box of Halloween stickers I bought at the Dollar Store. They each had to say "Gracias" and then I said "De nada". Some needed help and others are starting to say "Gracias" on their own-so cool! They sat down and the next group of four kids go to go "Trick-or-Treating". They LOVED this activity! If you haven't tried it yet, do so. It is in the Spanish In October lesson! You can repeat this every week during the month of October!
