March Week 4: Easy Review Activities

Hola DSA Teachers!

Below are two engaging activities to help you review the digital lesson with your students. These review exercises are optional, so if you're short on time, don't fret! Simply showing your students the digital lesson will still make you the Spanish master!

You will practice:

1.  House: 00:00-3:16

2.  Clean Up: 3:17-5:25

1. Furnish the Rooms in House: 15 Minutes

Supplies Needed: A copy of the rooms and furniture visuals

Show the class the picture of the exterior of "your" new house visual. (I pretend that it is my house when I show them the picture.) Next, show them the pictures of the blank inside rooms of the house. Act sad as you look at the empty rooms. Tell them you’re sad because your new house doesn’t have any furniture! Ask them to raise their hand if they would like to help you put furniture in your house. (Most kids will raise their hand.) Act delighted that they will help you! Tell them you’ve picked out eight pieces of furniture. Hold up the pictures of the furniture and check to see that the kiddos know the names of each item in English first. The only item that most young kids aren't sure about is "dresser". I hear "drawers" "closet" "table". Etc. You will probably have to teach them what a "dresser" is in English to get them ready to learn the word in Spanish.

Furniture you'll teach:

1. the stove (la estufa)

2. the refrigerator (la nevera)

3. the couch/sofa (el sofá)

4. the TV (la televisión)

5. the toilet (el inodoro)

6. the sink (el lavabo)

7. the bed (la cama)

8. the dresser (la cómoda)

Tell the kids that as soon as they learn how to say the furniture in Spanish, they can help you decorate your new home! Play "Spanish in March (The House)" audio file below.  Hold up the pictures of the rooms and the furniture

as you listen to them and as they are taught. Be sure to encourage your students to repeat the words with the audio file. You can follow along with the pronunciation table above.

Spanish In March (The House)

Put the "bed" in the "bedroom"

Next, let's uncover the hidden interior designers in your class! Challenge your students to jazz up rooms with fun furniture. Here is the language you can use to carry out this activity in Spanish:

Put __________ in ____________.

Pon __________en ___________.

Pronunciation:

(Pohn ____________ en ______________.)

Examples:

Put the sofa in the living room.

Pon el sofá en la sala.

(Pohn ehl soh-fah en lah sah-lah.).

Put the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Pon la nevera en la cocina.

Pronunciation:  (Pohn lah neh-beh-dah en lah koh-see-nah.)

If you want some guidance to get started, play the following audio file.

After engaging in this enjoyable activity multiple times, they should no longer require your assistance. In fact, you could appoint one of your students to instruct their peers on where to place the furniture. To add a touch of humor and assess their listening skills, ask them to place furniture in unconventional rooms. For instance, you could say,

"Put the toilet in the living room"

("Pon el indoro en la sala")

(Pronunciation:  Pohn ehl ee-noh-doh-doh en lah sah-lah).

They might give you a puzzled look or a chuckle, but if they actually move the toilet to the living room, you'll know they understood you in Spanish!
