Host Family Children & Exchange Students Attend Bilingual Camp Together!
Bilingual Summer Camps
O’Neill Language Academy (OLA) specializes in Bilingual Summer Camps for students ages 12 to17. What sets us apart from other summer camps is that our camps are bilingual (Spanish/English, French/English or German/English). You will want to register your child for the same language that they are studying in school: Spanish, French, or German. Our camps are open to:
- Host Family Children
- Exchange Students
- Any Child Interested in a Bilingual Camp Experience
OLA’s camps include meaningful activities in English and the second language. Teenagers are excited to share and learn about each other’s language and culture while developing international friendships. Our language instructors know how to make learning a second language achievable for students of all ages and levels. The best teaching is always made better with an engaging curriculum which is why we've developed specialized lessons aimed at the interests of teenage students. We cover all of the language skills and our main focus is on developing listening, speaking, pronunciation and vocabulary with a concentration on themes that teenagers respond well to such as sports, music, dance and theater. The afternoons are reserved for leisure activities like swimming, horseback riding, fishing, cooking, arts and crafts and games.
Location
Camps are located in Maplewood, Minnesota, just 4 miles from downtown St. Paul. We are situated on Battle Creek Park which offers miles of biking, rollerblading and walking paths and we are just 400 yards from an outdoor waterslide park. We are also close to fishing lakes, horseback riding ranches, a bowing alley, movie theaters and more.

*If enough students are interested we will take an exciting four day trip to South Dakota to visit the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, The Black Hills National Forest, Crazy Horse, explore underground caves, pan for gold, check out 'The Cosmos',see reenactments of famous gangster show downs, take an 1880 train ride, visit American Indian Reservations, see how cowboys live, and much more!
Language Placement Tests
On the first day of camp American students take a placement test in Spanish, French or German and foreign students take a placement test in English. We want to insure that we teach each student at their present level in their target language. Every student receives a workbook and on the last day they receive a certificate at the end of the camp.
Second Language vs. English Time
Since host family children and exchange students can attend camp together we offer daily immersion activities in English and the second language. The majority of time is spent in English to accommodate our exchange students who travel to Minnesota for the main purpose of learning English, however we also spend time in the second language each day so American students can improve their second language skills too.
Eligibility
To attend OLA’s bilingual summer camps students must be 12-17 years of age before May 31, 2011. No previous knowledge of Spanish is required for American students but it is recommended. A basic to intermediate level of English is required for Spanish students.
